Do You Need A 3 Wood?

Do You Need A 3 Wood?
A few years ago many players were scared to death of their driver and often drove the ball with a 3 wood. Thanks to modern technology, now almost anyone can use a driver and lots of players now refer to it as their favorite club. Large and light titanium heads with sophistacted weight distribution, ultra light high quality graphite shafts and more loft have helped us all achieve better launch angles and greater hang time.
Even with all the new technology, I believe the increased loft on the driver faces has helped recreational players more than anything else. It is now a rare occasion when we sell a driver with less than 10 degrees of loft. In fact, most of our customers do best with at least 12 degrees and the slower swinging players get the most benefit from 15 degrees or even more. If your driver falls into the latter category then you essentially have a 3 wood disguised as a driver which is why you like it so much. If this is the case,  a 3 wood is basically just duplicating your driver. It might be a little easier to use off the deck but if you’ve noticed, while driver lofts have increased, the loft on all other clubs has decreased. Today’s 5 wood usually has 17 or 18 degrees of loft compared to 21 degrees from a few years ago thereby making it a 4 wood with a 5 inscribed on the sole.
Next time you have a chance, hit a bunch of 3 woods and 5 woods and compare the results. In all likelihood your best 3 and 5 wood shots won’t differ much in distance but your 5 wood shots will be straighter. If this is so, consider replacing your 3 wood with a club you can make better use of such as an additional wedge or hybrid.
